Branching story technique #1: Creating the Feel of Time Passing

Branching stories are simple sims where players make a series of decisions  to shape and advance a story. I have found ten surprisingly easy and effective "little" techniques as I have been building a large volume of short branching stories recently for a client's ethics program.  I will do one short post on each technique.

Here is the first: Use a simple "advance to the next slide" framework to create the feel for the passing of time.   For example:

I have used this technique (with simple, New Yorker style graphics) to draw out the passage of time, including for a contractor waiting to be paid from a client, and a parent waiting for news from an operation.  This technique helps simulate the emotional state of the main sim character, as well as the real world options.
